Richard Kimball, RN, PhD, MSN, MPH

Richard Kimball is a founding member and current board member of The Truth About Nursing and its predecessor The Center for Nursing Advocacy, being involved since 2001. He holds a PhD in health policy from the University of Maryland Baltimore County and Masters degrees in Community Health Nursing and Public Health from the Johns Hopkins University Schools of Nursing and Public Health. Dr. Kimball is an ANCC board certified advanced practice nurse in public health.

Dr. Kimball currently works as a Social Science Research Analyst at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. He works on issues surrounding the financial management of Medicaid contracts with states. Prior to government service, Dr. Kimball was an assistant professor at the University of New Mexico College of Nursing (UNMCON). His research interests there included quality of life issues surrounding people with disabilities as well as women's reproductive health outcomes and how these relate to the social determinants of health. Dr. Kimball supported Sigma Theta Tau, nursing honor society, during his tenure at UNMCON, serving as the vice-president of the local chapter.

Prior to his position at the University of New Mexico, Dr. Kimball practiced in the Department of Neurology at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, where he held a joint appointment with the Johns Hopkins School of Nursing, in the Department of Acute and Chronic Care. He practiced for over 10 years as a research and clinical care nurse in the nurse-directed Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) Clinic at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. While there Dr. Kimball helped case manage over 200 ALS patients. In addition, he worked as a psychiatric nurse at the Johns Hopkins Hospital, from 1999-2001. Dr. Kimball also worked with terminally ill patients as the coordinator of a health care decision-making study at the JHU School of Nursing from 2001 until 2002.

Dr. Kimball earned a Bachelor of Science in nursing degree (BSN) at Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing in 1999. He served in the Peace Corps in the Republic of Moldova from 1993-1995 and subsequently worked for two USAID contractors in Moldova and central Asia from 1995-1997. Dr. Kimball decided to become a nurse after seeing effective nursing interventions in infection control and women's health programs during his service overseas.

Dr. Kimball has been a Peace Corps Fellow at the JHU School of Nursing, an Albert Schweitzer Scholar at JHU, and a Sargent Shriver Peaceworker at University of Maryland Baltimore County. He was the 2010 recipient of the Shriver Peaceworker Program's Practical Idealist Award.

Dr. Kimball lives in Baltimore, Maryland with his son.
